"transcript": "[00:00:00.000-00:00:05.380] Before Sandstone Cared Life for me was pretty miserable.\n[00:00:05.740-00:00:15.160] You know, I became a slave to drugs and alcohol, and it also did not help my mental health.\n[00:00:15.380-00:00:23.040] I lost a lot of hope, lost a lot of spirituality. I was spiritually bankrupt.\n[00:00:23.320-00:00:30.120] I blamed it on a lot of things and a lot of people, but never really wanted to look at my part in it.\n[00:00:30.400-00:00:37.720] Before coming here, there was like a lack of accountability, and so Sandstone definitely gave that accountability back to me.\n[00:00:39.260-00:00:46.780] When the pain got real enough for me to come to Sandstone, it was the fact that I was becoming something that I'm not.\n[00:00:46.860-00:00:53.160] And what I mean by that is, you know, I'm a very respectful man to the opposite sex, the female.\n[00:00:53.920-00:01:02.400] And so I was becoming the opposite of that, and I was not enjoying the days, the waking up and saying, wow, what did I just do?\n[00:01:04.940-00:01:06.180] Because I didn't know what was going on.\n[00:01:06.200-00:01:13.460] I was trying to fix the broken brain with the broken brain, you know, and it was a hamster wheel.\n[00:01:13.540-00:01:19.920] That's when the pain got real enough for me, is when I couldn't manage myself, my thoughts, my reactions and responses to situations and social environments.\n[00:01:26.200-00:01:34.940] I work graveyard shift, and I'm a custodian, and I am able to listen to my headphone, and YouTube has a Sandstone Care ad.\n[00:01:38.460-00:01:42.200] I was, you know, just spending money on my drugs and stuff, and I couldn't afford the premium.\n[00:01:42.200-00:01:49.080] And I kid you not, every ad was Sandstone Care after every song, before every song.\n[00:01:49.500-00:01:54.340] And one day I couldn't, I was real busy, so I couldn't skip the ad.\n[00:01:54.560-00:01:59.220] And the song that the little tune that was going on was just kind of relaxing me.\n[00:01:59.220-00:02:00.800] And I was like, what is this, man?\n[00:02:00.820-00:02:03.760] So I looked at it, and it says Sandstone Care.\n[00:02:03.880-00:02:14.620] And so I looked it up, and it said, do you need help with mental health and behavioral health and substance abuse?\n[00:02:15.160-00:02:17.240] And I was like, how does it know?\n[00:02:17.920-00:02:19.860] Like, how do these things just happen?\n[00:02:20.480-00:02:22.980] You know, it has to be something higher.\n[00:02:23.600-00:02:30.120] Treatment at Sandstone, for me, with my experience, it was different.\n[00:02:30.200-00:02:33.420] To me, it felt like it wasn't just like, oh, well, how do you feel about that?\n[00:02:33.970-00:02:40.760] It was more like getting involved with the underlying, like they say, like the iceberg anger.\n[00:02:40.880-00:02:42.560] That's just the surface of the iceberg.\n[00:02:42.900-00:02:46.240] And so we would touch up on all the stuff that was under the iceberg.\n[00:02:46.300-00:02:48.580] And it was a safe zone. It was comfortable.\n[00:02:48.860-00:02:51.760] It was four days a week, so that was really helpful.\n[00:02:52.080-00:02:58.120] You know, they say that drugs and alcohol are but a symptom of the disease of addiction.\n[00:02:59.520-00:03:09.560] And what this place helped me do is dig deep into, like, the main reason was for me to have those symptoms to use.\n[00:03:09.980-00:03:17.760] Sandstone, here, again, taught me how to have a relationship with myself, to be able to have a relationship with others.\n[00:03:17.960-00:03:22.700] And that means, like, I could take the mask off, and I don't have to put it back on.\n[00:03:23.260-00:03:24.760] I could just be who I am.\n[00:03:25.080-00:03:27.620] I was told once, who hears you is here.\n[00:03:29.260-00:03:31.060] And I was like, what does that mean?\n[00:03:31.300-00:03:33.360] And I never understood until I came here.\n[00:03:33.560-00:03:35.860] And the ones that hear me are still in my life.\n[00:03:36.040-00:03:38.440] The ones that are here for me are still in my life.\n[00:03:38.600-00:03:43.220] I'm just grateful for this place because now I get to mend those relationships.\n[00:03:43.300-00:03:45.440] Because yes, the trust, some of the trust is gone.\n[00:03:46.320-00:03:48.380] But it's not nothing that's not fixable.\n[00:03:48.520-00:03:52.840] What I would say, well, here, let me, I'm going to put it this way.\n[00:03:53.200-00:03:59.400] Let's just say, hypothetically, that the whole reason is like, oh, well, I don't have time. I have bills.\n[00:04:00.380-00:04:02.900] I have this, I have that.\n[00:04:03.660-00:04:05.380] You're still going to have those regardless.\n[00:04:07.080-00:04:14.620] The thing is, is that time is on our side.\n[00:04:15.260-00:04:18.800] And what I mean by that is, like, everything is going to pass.\n[00:04:18.880-00:04:21.440] If you're feeling good, that too shall pass.\n[00:04:21.920-00:04:23.440] If you're feeling bad, that too shall pass.\n[00:04:24.260-00:04:31.680] So why not take the time to make yourself feel better so you could handle situations like that?\n[00:04:32.180-00:04:37.560] Because all that stuff that is like preventing you is still going to be there.\n[00:04:37.680-00:04:40.660] Like when I'm done with Sandstone, I'm going to have those bills still.\n[00:04:41.380-00:04:44.600] When I'm done with Sandstone, I'm going to have those responsibilities still.\n[00:04:44.640-00:04:54.320] And if I can't take care of myself, how am I able to take care of those And then also is everything that I used to do did not work at all, ever.\n[00:04:58.020-00:05:02.940] My thinking got me into a miserable state of not knowing that there was a solution.\n[00:05:03.900-00:05:07.100] But this place here gave me hope and gave me a solution.\n[00:05:07.420-00:05:09.260] Coming here, that's what it's going to do.\n[00:05:09.600-00:05:15.040] And even if it doesn't, and this is the harsh reality of this disease.\n[00:05:15.680-00:05:18.020] But if, you know, let's just try it.\n[00:05:18.120-00:05:20.340] Let's just try it for a few months.\n[00:05:20.840-00:05:30.820] And if I'm not happy, I could refund my misery and just go straight back to where I came from. But that doesn't work.\n[00:05:31.380-00:05:35.020] It never has and it never will because it's always the same out there.\n[00:05:35.540-00:05:38.340] This place gave me hope and gave me something to look forward to."

What can you do?\n[00:00:17.880-00:00:23.560] When you don't feel good about yourself, how do you work through that, as opposed to turning to drugs and alcohol?\n[00:00:23.560-00:00:28.940] It's been heartbreaking to watch her being hurt.\n[00:00:29.260-00:00:36.880] I didn't realize there was already some anxiety and fears and feeling left out when she was younger.\n[00:00:37.140-00:00:40.800] I feel, especially at my house, I kind of just stayed in my room all the time.\n[00:00:41.060-00:00:49.960] I didn't really want to do my homework in the living room. I just isolated in my room. It's just constant worry. Constantly worrying about her.\n[00:00:49.960-00:00:52.620] When she's got the lows, how long is it going to last?\n[00:00:53.200-00:00:57.220] When she's feeling good, how long is that going to last before the lows start again?\n[00:00:59.660-00:01:06.140] Every human being's greatest fear is being inadequate, and that manifests itself in a million different ways.\n[00:01:06.300-00:01:11.200] I don't think we were intended to live in suffering our entire lives, and this consumes them.\n[00:01:11.300-00:01:20.160] The common thread is that it's very difficult to encounter someone who's struggling with addictions that doesn't have a mental health component.\n[00:01:20.420-00:01:27.520] It's more likely that someone would have mental health and not have addictions, but they typically go hand-in-hand.\n[00:01:27.620-00:01:34.900] And I think the real key is being able to treat both the mental health and the addiction simultaneously, because when you\n[00:01:34.900-00:01:37.740] try to pick someone apart, they feel fragmented.\n[00:01:38.400-00:01:45.740] I've been doing this work in mental health and addictions for close to 30 years now, and what we are is a program that provides\n[00:01:45.740-00:01:54.500] services to adolescents and young adults and the families, the whole core system who are struggling with mental health and addiction issues.\n[00:01:54.800-00:02:00.120] Really, honestly, the core of what we do is about connection. It's about relationships.\n[00:02:00.520-00:02:09.040] And I think the reason families feel that with us is because they come into a community. They are welcome. They are seen.\n[00:02:09.400-00:02:14.400] It isn't like they come in and somebody walks by and they wonder who that person is.\n[00:02:14.860-00:02:20.000] They know every staff member in the program, and every staff member knows every family.\n[00:02:21.080-00:02:32.900] Your perfection is already established because you are standing and living and breathing, and you bring something to this world. Everyone has a story.\n[00:02:33.340-00:02:38.880] To not give up, you know, take time out of your life to look for help.\n[00:02:38.980-00:02:43.520] It's not something that you can do on your own as a parent. It really isn't. It's so much bigger.\n[00:02:43.900-00:02:50.420] Just these kids being able to talk to somebody who is impartial to things, and if they can feel comfortable enough to open\n[00:02:50.420-00:02:54.120] up with how they're feeling, I think that would help a lot. You're not alone.\n[00:02:54.380-00:02:56.520] There's people out there going through the same.\n[00:02:57.300-00:03:02.340] And all I can say is just keep loving your kid, you know, unconditional love.\n[00:03:02.740-00:03:05.580] Honestly, it's just way easier to take it one day at a time.\n[00:03:05.820-00:03:08.960] Because if you can make it through today, you can make it through tomorrow.\n[00:03:09.780-00:03:12.400] And you're going to keep making it through. I promise."
