What to Look for When Selecting a Treatment Center in Alexandria

The Right Program: A detailed interview and assessment process with a clinical professional. Look for an organization that assesses physical and mental health, as well as qualifications for your loved one’s specific needs. Make sure the organization you’re considering has skilled experience with the the drawbacks your loved on is facing.

If the organization isn’t right for your substance abuse treatment, ask if they have referrals for a more appropriate fit.

Professional Team: Look for a licensed, experienced organization that focuses on a team-oriented approach, working together to support each client and their family. Find a team that includes individual and family therapists, substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists, and dietitians.

highly credentialed team taking a holistic approach to care is critical to achieving successful outcomes from substance abuse and addiction treatments.

Safety: An organization that focuses on participant safety, both physical and emotional. Many people will discover through the treatment process that abstinence from all substances is the best choice for them. Through this journey, it is important to support participants in staying safe and reducing harm.

Find a support system you trust to aid your substance abuse and addiction treatment.

Mental Health and Trauma Training: Drug abuse and addiction generally co-occur with a mental health or trauma experience. It is important that a treatment program has the ability to treat not only substance abuse but also underlying mental health concerns and trauma.

Ideally, a program would have a psychiatrist on staff, and staff trained in trauma-informed care. A good support system believes recovery and healing are two sides of the same coin, and both are necessary for long-lasting success.

An Individualized Program: An organization that tailors the experience to the individual and their unique needs. Find a team that sees you or your loved one as a person and creates a support program based on what is needed. True change from substance abuse and addiction treatment comes from authentic connection and genuine investment.

Strengths Based: An approach that focuses on what is working and nurtures those activities, patterns, and behaviors to encourage health and vibrancy.

Evidence-Based Care: An organization that draws on research and time-tested practices for the best possible outcome. Research or ask about the therapy methods they use in addition treatment.

Family Oriented: Any large life challenge always affects and is impacted by the surrounding system. Find an organization that supports and integrates the whole family. No one walks the road to recovery alone.

Fairfax County’s Drug Problem

Due to its proximity to Washington DC, it’s home to many US intelligence agencies including the CIA. Fairfax was the first county to reach a six figure median household income in the US.

Fairfax county has a higher concentration of tech workers than Silicon Valley. Top employers in this county include the US government and public schools.

Tysons Corner is Virginia’s largest office market and the nation’s largest suburban business district with over 26 million square feet of office space and has been called the center of the global military-industrial complex.

Despite the wealth and access to excellent public schools in Fairfax County, the people are not immune to the growing opioid drug epidemic.

Opioids are the number one cause of unnatural death in Fairfax County. There were 83 opioid deaths in 2018, 70 of those involved heroin/fentanyl. Among youth, painkillers are the 3rd most commonly used substance, after alcohol and marijuana. Young adults ages 20-24 were seen in emergency rooms for prescription opioid overdoses more than any other age group.

Another scary statistic is that law enforcement is seeing fentanyl being mixed not just with heroin, but with cocaine, meth, ketamine, and synthetic cannabinoids. The rate of overdoses involving fentanyl is increasing, and is higher in Fairfax County than all of Virginia. In Fairfax County, the death rate from heroin overdoses has doubled in the past two years, (similar to national trend) especially among young adult males.

Opioids are the # 1 cause of unnatural death in Fairfax county

How Fairfax County is Managing its Public Health Crisis

Fairfax County Opioid Task Force

In response to the growing crisis, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors created the Fairfax County Opioid Task Force, which provided strategy on how to address the crisis effectively. They made the following recommendations:

Key Goals

  • Reduce death from opioids through prevention, treatment and harm reduction.
  • Use data to describe the problem, target interventions and evaluate effectiveness.

How to Accomplish the Key Goals

  • Education and awareness
  • Drug storage, disposal and monitoring
  • Treatment
  • Enforcement and criminal justice
  • Data and monitoring

REVIVE! Team

REVIVE! was created in response to the growing number of people OD’ing on opioids. REVIVE makes naloxone (Narcan) available to lay rescuers to reverse opioid overdoses. REVIVE! Trains people on what to do and not to do in an overdose situation, how to administer naloxone, and what to do afterwards. Each trainee receives a free REVIVE! Kit which includes all the supplies needed to administer the medication as well as a safety plan to help people prevent overdose if they relapse.

Schools & Prevention Program

The Substance Abuse Prevention Program is a partnership between the Fairfax-Fall Church Community Services Board and Fairfax County Public Schools works to provide substance use prevention, assessments and treatment to teens who are at risk of or who are actively using drugs.

There are specialized staff at the 7 high schools to ensure that teens have access to services to reduce substance use and address underlying issues that may lead to substance usage. The program is confidential and staff are well trained in substance use and recovery.

Fairfax County Public Mental Health Services

The Fairfax County Department of Health and Human Services offers a range of free and affordable public assistance programs to residents who are in need of mental health or substance abuse services because of lack of insurance, income, or legal status. Programs include:

Fairfax County Drug & Alcohol Recovery Resources

In addition to seeking out support from addiction professionals, having a network of people that will build you up as you continue your sobriety is very important. Organizations like 12 Step Programs and SMART Recovery provide meetings that build up sober individuals and help to create a supportive community.
