Residential Addiction Treatment

What do typical residential drug & alcohol treatment programs include?

There are many different levels of Inpatient / Residential Care. Generally, these programs share the following criteria:

  • Clients live on site at the facility with 24 hour care
  • Days are highly structured with clinical activities including individual and group therapy, medical support and assessment, and addiction counseling. There is generally not less than 20 hrs per week of counseling.
  • Program lengths vary from a few weeks to several months
  • Some programs incorporate day trips and family/community visits
  • Residential or Inpatient Care is the highest level of care: ideal for clients with concerns for safety to self or others, active addiction, or people struggling to function in the day to day.

Inpatient Care and Residential Rehabilitation Programs are designed to be highly structured with 24 hour, 7 days a week clinical support systems. Participants live on site and participate in daily clinical programming. The most intensive programs can feature client medication and up to 16 hrs per day of counselor interaction. These programs may be housed in a hospital or rehabilitation center and amenities and services vary greatly between different programs. The course of care can be a few weeks to several months and may incorporate a variety of counseling and education practices including therapy, medication management, accurate psychological assessment and diagnosis, physical assessment and care, and addiction counseling. More and more programs also offer alternative therapies such as yoga, meditation, and animal therapy.

People in a crisis situation, with a high level of concern for their safety, those experiencing chemical detoxification, or those struggling to function independently tend to benefit most from Inpatient Care. The high level of structure and support is ideal for those beginning on the road to recovery or those for whom less supportive care systems have been ineffective. Clients with severe safety or addiction concerns can sometimes be admitted to a hospital first for detox and then be transferred to another facility for inpatient treatment. Inpatient and Rehabilitation Care organizations provide the highest levels of support, with professionals available around the clock for support.

Why choose residential substance abuse treatment versus outpatient?

Inpatient and residential rehabilitation programs provide a safe and secure environment to delve into recovery and healing. Substances and the daily stresses that may trigger use are far removed, lessening the chance of use or relapse, allowing foundational treatment to occur. Most day to day concerns such as meals, schedules, and life maintenance errands are taken care of by the facility, allowing clients to focus solely on recovery. In addition, participants are surrounded by a supportive community of professionals and peers working toward healthy living.

Importance of Dual-Diagnosis Care

Many people struggling with addiction or substance use have turned to substances as a coping method for an underlying mental health issue. As a result, inpatient care settings that are equipped to provide co-occurring or dual-diagnosis care are often preferred. The best residential rehabs and inpatient programs have a psychiatrists and licensed mental health professionals on staff to provide mental health evaluations and ongoing clinical support to help address the underlying mental health needs. This attention to co-occurring disorders allows for a more effective recovery plan to ensure sustainable recovery is achieved.

Healthy living without substance abuse and addiction is possible. Inpatient and Residential Rehabilitation programs can be the foundation that begins the journey to a successful and long lasting recovery.
