When an individual is struggling with both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder, the two conditions are referred to as “co-occurring disorders,” or “dual diagnoses.” This situation is quite common; according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 82 percent of teens who entered a treatment program for addiction also met the criteria for a mental health disorder.
Almost all of us use substances. Whether it’s coffee in the morning, a glass of wine at dinner, or a painkiller when we have a headache, we are not unfamiliar with substances that alter our state of being.
Everyone struggles. For some, substance abuse and addiction affect the ability to function and enjoy life. Fortunately, the knowledge and research around drug use, addiction, and recovery has never been stronger. Support is available. Recovery is possible.
